HP Envy 4500 - Design and Features ( from the USA)

The HP Envy 4500 is a low-profile black box, a bit taller than the Envy 120, but more discreet. It does this by using a similar, two-cartridge print engine, with black and a tri-colour cartridges. This makes the machine easier to maintain, but can result in ink wastage, if you print a lot of one colour.
The 1,200ppi flatbed scanner has no Automatic Document Feed (ADF), which you wouldn’t expect on this class of machine, but the lid is substantial and avoids the fingerprint-hungry, high-gloss finish of earlier models. The control panel, on a steeply raked facia at the front, has a 50mm LCD display set into it. This is unusual in an entry-level all-in-one, but HP has economised by using a mono LCD. This isn’t as restricting as it might seem. Although you can’t view thumbnails of photos, the printer has no card or USB slots, so there’s little call for any.
The front panel folds down and becomes both feed and output tray, using a swing-out and fold-up support in the front edge of the tray – a very similar idea to Canon’s FastFront. Here, though, the tray pulls out for easier paper loading. It can take A4 sheets and photo paper down to 15 x 10cm.
Hinging up the top scanner section gives good access to the twin cartridges, which slide forward into their holder and are held in place by two flip-over levers.
At the back is a single USB socket, but most people will connect via wireless, as this gives access to Wireless Direct print from mobile devices, including both Android and iOS via AirPrint. You can also download HP’s Printable pages, most of which are colouring and join-the-dots-style amusements for you or your kids.
HP Envy 4500 - Print Speeds

HP rates the Envy 4500 at 8.8ppm in mono and 5.2ppm in colour, both respectable speeds. We got somewhere near the mono speed, with our 20-page test giving 7.7ppm, though the more typical five-page document only gave 5.3ppm.
Our five-page, colour test came in at 2.3ppm. Even so, speeds were comparable to some of the machine’s main competitors. Duplex print, which is standard on the machine, gave a good speed of 3.9 sides per minute.
Here, though, it’s very close in quality to normal mode print and could easily be used as the default setting for most work. Print speed in draft mode is only marginally faster than normal – we measured it at 7.9ppm – but there is presumably some ink use saving as well.

An A4 copy took 48 seconds, which is not particularly quick, and 15 x 10 cm photos took around 1 minute 20 seconds, which is fair.

Print quality is generally very good, with sharp, dense black text and bright, resonant colour graphics. There was some slight banding in colour fills noticeable from our test machine and the printer, as with many HP machines, has the annoying habit of reducing duplex pages by around 10 percent in size.

Using the XL version of both cartridges, page costs come out at 4.5p for mono and 9.8p for colour, both of which are on the high side, even for a printer in this price range.

HP’s ePrint, the first wireless print technology to get off the ground, stands up well to others and it’s very easy to print to the Envy 4500 from a variety of platforms.

If you’re on a tight budget and need easy wireless connection from smartphone or tablet, the HP Envy 4500 could be just your machine. It stands up well against the obvious competition and benefits from its LCD display and neat, unobtrusive design.
