A Damp Proof Course (DPC) is a horizontal material that is applied at foundation stage in construction to prevent wet, flaky, 'rotten', spotty, cracked, and peeling walls. These manifestations of rising damp, as the problem is commonly called, affect cement- and mortar-based walls in all kinds of structures - houses, fences, markets, schools, offices, etc.- and is seen in every village, town, city, district and region in Ghana. Rising damp is not only unsightly (an eyesore) but, if not treated, also damages walls in the long run.
Rising damp occurs when foundations of structures absorb water and moisture from the ground and travels up the walls through capillary action. What this means is that the walls act as a wick to absorb water and moisture.
The solution to rising damp is Damp Proof Course - a constant material in home building and construction in United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and other European countries. DPC is a water-proof material (embossed polyethylene) designed to resist water/moisture. When applied at foundation stage of the building process, and at a certain height above ground level, it acts as a barrier to block water/moisture in the ground rising up walls. If applied to correct specifications, DPC lasts forever to keep walls dry in the lifetime of the building or structure thereby increasing the value and comfort in homes especially.
Blue Star Dry Homes have unrivalled expertise in DPC and will offer free advice to clients to ensure its correct application and maximum benefit.
The material is black and offered in rolls measuring 18 centimetres (7 inches) wide by 30 meters (1181 inches) long and 500 microns thick. It is sourced from a manufacturer that services markets in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand
